Lydia Lunch
Lydia Lunch
I was invited to see the B52’s debut NY concert at Max’s Kansas City. Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were the opening act. I didn’t like them at all…
At that time, I didn’t know what “punk rock” was.
All I knew was that Lydia complained to her band that “X” song was too long at 35 seconds and needed to be shorter.
Later, I learned that the band members of Lydia’s group were actually quite good musicians, but were trying to play “bad”, while the B52s were not that apt as musicians (yet), but were trying to play as good as they could…

I was assigned to shoot the cover for “Queen of Siam” by Tony Wright for ZE Records.
Lydia showed me a book “Glamour Portraits of the “30s” and a photo of Lucille Ball that Lydia wanted to emulate.
I asked Eric Boman, a Vogue fashion photographer, who I often assisted if he would do the hair and makeup or Lydia. When Eric was finished, he asked Lydia if he liked what he had done and her reply was “No!” and promptly destroyed the hairdo.
